Rich Murray

Hello,

I am trying to find out some history of a 1960 Corvette that I recently purchased. I am rebuilding it into a custom restomod. The name on the title is Freamon Rushing. His name and Biloxi Dragway came up in a search. I think the car might be in the top left photo on your contact page. Any chance you have some old pictures or history on the car ? I saw Freamon's name on the website - could you ask if I can contact him ? I've rebuilt a couple of Corvettes (1967 and 1969) and I like to have a car's old history and photos if available. I am guessing the engine was blown, maybe racing at your dragway ? I am not looking to hassle previous owners, as I am tearing the whole car apart (old body on a new corvette chassis), but really love knowing the history of the cars, even if it is a crazy one. Thanks,

Alex Kelly

Hi there,

I work for a production company that is creating a heritage documentary series on renowned drag racer Herb McCandless. McCandless raced independently in the 1960's and then with the Sox and Martin team in the 1970's.

I am searching for photos of the tracks that Herb raced at to use in the film and am looking for pictures of the Biloxi Dragway track from the 60's. Do you have an images that would work for this, and would you allow us to use the images in the film?

Thank you for your time and consideration, I look forward to hearing from you.

I know the Camaro, a red white and blue car running e-modified production and had the pleasure of working on it, i learned great volumes just by paying attention to his ingenious work, this car was then owned by my friend McNeeley Bennett, so many good memories and so fortunate to have lived during that period later building Hangfire Racing engines..

We looked like a scene out of Grapes of Wrath. We had our shop in the trunk. I had two short-blocks mounted underneath the trailer. We had a spare head, a sizeable toolbox, gaskets, and rods in the truck. We had our suitcases in the back seat. We ran the last week of March in Denver, until the second weekend in August in Biloxi, Mississippi. This included winning the NASCAR (yes NASCAR) Summer Nationals in Montgomery, New York. A lot of time it was once a week that we raced. But we did some doubles and one triple—the weekend we won the NASCAR Nationals. We ran qualifying on Friday and Saturday in Ohio, then back to the NASCAR National to win on Sunday in Montgomery, New York.

Hi folks. Great site! Wonderful article by Charles on "Strip Teaser" match race! You folks are trying to "keep the History alive" as I am. One of my best friends on the planet lives in Pas Christian. Been to Biloxi to eat seafood several times!

We are putting together a campaign to get "Strip Teaser" into the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Hubert Platt has agrees to do the Banzai run.

It would help A LOT if we had a fine, scanned print of the flyer we could include in our package. We would also want to blow it up and display it at Goodwood with the car. It would also make sense to have Biloxi website info on the display.

All the best,

Greg Sullivan

I just noticed, when I looked at the picture again, in the background, behind the 4 engine car, is my old 32 coupe, that Dalton Corlette had at that time, and Daltons daddy's 57 Ford Ranchero push car, behind it. If anyone might know where this 32 coupe is now, please let me know.

Boogie Scott

I was checking out the old Biloxi articles, came across this one with Ivo's old 4 motor car. I saw this car under construction at Kent Fullers shop. It didn't run very fast, but put on a good show with all 4 tires smoking, but that was all T.V.Tommy wanted to do. I saw that I won middle elim. that day. Also, Dalton Corlette won little elim., but it wasn't a 57 chev.,it was my old 32 Ford coupe, that I sold to Dalton after I built the Bantam that I was running then, and Dalton had a 57 Chev. engine in it. Also, I did the roll bar, traction bars, and headers on Andys 54 Corvette. Paul Vanderly,s dragster that Jimmy Burt was driving, had a blown 392 Chrysler, Lenny Dobard had an injected small block. Lenny died a long time ago, Paul died in April this year, Jimmy is still around, I saw him right after Cruising the Coast. Jack Cooley is still around, saw him a little over a year ago.

I won 2 class trophies. Then in 1962 in raced my 327ci powered '56 Chevy in C Mod Production. I have pics of both cars (not at the strip). I recently found some 1967 issues of the Dragway newsletter. Hey Guys,

I won my first race in “A” strictly stock at Biloxi in 1965 driving my 65 Malibu SS with a 327ci 350 hp brand new car. I later ran AFX and “A” stock. I won the Mississippi State championship in “A” strictly stock in Hub City that same year running 13.80. It was a fast car straight from the factory with a 4-speed 331 posi-rear end. I came and saw a lot of the big racers at Biloxi Drag Strip. I even recognize some of the other guys names listed that raced when I did.

Good luck on getting lots of folks to sign up.

i first ventured to biloxi in late 65 as an 11year old. first race was don gay vs jim o’connor. we had been to hammond a couple times, i think once to see garlits. biloxi was a magical place back then, really looked forward to seeing all the super stockers, a/fx cars, and the blown funny cars. match racing was so great in those days, always super runs. the kingfish, the gay’s, the bronco buster, ramchargers, don nicholson, candies and hughes, and all the rest. you could count on good close racing, and the drivers were fan oriented. don and roy gay always wrote to me and made sure i had the latest news on their cars, new t-shirts, and in fact, those two really were responsible for my 40 plus year addiction to drag racing. my mom used to sit with marie gay, and also sidney foster’s mom when they raced. we made all the gas coupe and sedan championships, and when the track closed, we migrated to la place, and then on to southland in houma. both had a lot of neat racing, but none were as magical as biloxi.

Thanks for creating the Website. Just want you to know that under the Drivers listing Alfred Krebs is listed. He was my uncle and died in 2000. He went by his nickname Ebb. He was born and lived in Pascagoula his entire life, except while serving in the Marines in the Korean war. He owned Ebb's Automotive repair on Old Mobile HWY in Pascagoula from the Early 70's until the late 90's. I remember him racing Ford's. He had a room full of trophies that was very cool, especially to a 7 year old.

I hope this info was helpful.

Ray Butterfield Jr.

Cory,

I remember many a good time at the old dragstrip. I didn’t have a car to race but spent as much time as I could once I got my drivers license.

I can remember watching the old Super Stock Bonanzas, including Shirley Shahan for one and the old AA/GS Stone, Woods and Cook.

Another interesting sidelight to all of this is the fact that my Dad (Ray Butterfield) worked as the P.A. Announcer for a time back in the either late 50’s or early 60’s, I remember him talking about meeting Don Garlits when he was just making a name for himself. I was a little too young to attend in those days but I think the fact that my dad having worked there sparked my interest in Hot Rods and it continues even today.

Keep up the good work with the site

Someone told me about the Biloxi Dragway site recently. Viewing the site brought back many good memories. I grew up on the Westbank of New Orleans as a youngster. I started going to the strip in the late 50's. Around 1961 I belonged to a car club called the Westside Chariots. Harvey Walters, from Gretna, purchased or leased the track around that time. We had about 10-15 members in the club and Harvey payed the club $75.00 a race for us to come work the race. I was the flagman. It was some of the greatest times I had growing up. At the time I think I was in the 10th. or 11th. grade. Several of us used to go to the local drive-in, (Nelson's in Gretna, "Happy Days"). We would stay there till about midnight on Saturday and then head for Biloxi. The fog/smog was always so thick on the Chef Hwy coming out of New Orleans that it would take us hours to get to Biloxi. We would have to drive 15-20 mph it was so thick. There was a room above the concession stand and we would sleep in it until the next morning. I remember Glen Cupit was the man back then. I remember flagging both Boogie Scott and Paul Vanderley when they both crashed their dragsters. I remember Don Gay just starting to race and coming to Biloxi to learn. I think his dad bought a car from Hayden Proffitt and they would tow to Biloxi form Houston and Proffitt would meet them there and tutoring Gay. I don't have many pictures from the track at that time but The few I can identify are C.J. Kearney, I think Lewis Carden from Alabama?, 4th Street Auto Wreckers from Harvey, La.,Andy Zanca's 53 Vette, Boogie Scott's 32 Coupe, Howard Harris' 31 Coupe from Bridge City. I also have some pics from Houma and Hammond Drags around 1962. At Houma they raced at the old wwII blimp base (Before Southland Dragway) and in Hammond they raced at the airport. Would love to send you pics but I am not that computer savvy and these are old snapshots in an album I have. Will share any other memories I have later if anything pops up in this old brain. Keep up the good work with the web site.

Ken Matthew

Hey Cory,

You`ve done a fine job on the Biloxi Dragway site...I still have not located the old 60`s literature and pics that I have from the strip but I will, `cause I don`t throw anything away.

I was over at my old friend Boogie Scott`s shop today in Louisiana and was telling him about your web site. He is a chassis builder from way back...you have a couple of pictures of his AA/Altered Bantam sedan on you site...it has #96 on the door and one pic even has his old green`51 ford Woodie push car...anyway, Boogie is in the NHRA hall off fame for racing and building drag cars (for many famous drag racers). He is 70 years old and still working and racing...not drag racing, but salt flat racing...He built a 1927 Ford T model roadster and races it every year at Bonneville...he ran 247 MPH in it last August and has it torn down and spread out all over his shop. I want you to meet him sometime. We are going to the NHRA Hot Rod reunion in Bowling this June where Boogie is to be one of several of this year`s honorees. Google: NHRA 2008 Hot Rod Reunion and take a look...all nostalgia car race meet. I traveled with Boogie to the Innaugural Reunion meet in Bowling Green a few years back and could not believe all the cars from the 50`s 60`s and 70`s that came...many of them were showing and many others also raced...and have you heard of their CackleFest (Google that !)...anyway, even though I haven`t found my old Biloxi pics and litrature, I see where you have expanded to other local strip coverage and I can loan you some Hammond Dragway pics and some LaPlace Dragway pics from the early 60`s...If you are interested, let me know.

Tell your dad Hi and I hope he is enjoying retirement as much as I am...you two need to come over and see my latest project...another `32 ford...this one is a nostalgia roadster with a `49 cadillac engine...`57 ford ...9'' rear...etc. "old school"....

later,

I cut my teeth as a kid at Biloxi, la place, and southland. Grew up in slidell, first trip to Biloxi was to see don gay vs bonanza. Had never seen a blown funny car before. I had hundreds of pictures I hauled around for years, alas all were lost in a truck theft in 1994. I saw a lot of the super stock bonanza’s, all of the state championships, as well as the gas, coupe, and sedan champsionships. Biloxi was a special place, later moved over to la place, and then to southland during college at nicholl’s state.. I hope to see more articles and pictures, would love to add my memories to these special places. Keep em flyin’

Inverness, fl, but memory is alive and well in these three dragways…………..

Cory, thanks for the reply.

I lived in the Fort Bayou community and attended Vancleave High school.I moved to Baton Rouge, LA to attend school in 1962.

My friend, Wayne Griffin and I hitchhiked to and from the dragstrip during my high school years.

During that time, the majority of racers seemed to be from Louisiana. Local racers best remembered were John Saucier, the Belton Family, Paul Vanderly, Frank Marshall and his wife.

John Saucier was from Ocean Springs and raced a SuperStock 57 Ford and later raced a 59 four speed Chevrolet, 348 engine. This was the first stock car I saw breaking into the 13 sec. bracket. I heard that he was killed driving a Mopar SS on the street.

The Belton Family raced a 36 Ford Coupe with a Corvette engine. It had a RoadRunner painted on the doors.

Paul Vanderly raced a Chrysler powered dragster. I believe it is his in the pictures sent.

Frank Marshall had a used car lot near Keesler. He had a 51 Ford with a Buick engine and a variety of SuperStock cars. He often lined up against his wife to race. The last time I saw him at a dragstrip was in Hammond, La with a lightweight 64 Ford Galaxie.

As mentioned in my first note, I was at the track when the Road Rebels dragster crashed. I was there with Ray Kendall, he was in the Air Force and worked at the dragstrip on Sundays.

I was on the West side of the strip, several hundred feet north of the starting line. I heard the dragster start and accelerate back down the strip toward the starting line. he cut the engine off and was coasting. He disappeared from my sight, then I saw the rear end of the dragster appear over the top of some cars. We all started running over there and the man hit by the dragster was pinned between his car and the axle of the dragster. He was screaming for someone to help him. The dragstrip officials realized the dragster driver had not signed a waiver, so off we go to Biloxi to get the waiver for him to sign. The owner of the track at that time, as told to me, owned the photo shop at Keesler Field. I heard later there was a lawsuit against the track owner.

I visited the strip whenever I could after I left Vancleave.

The last time I visited the strip was to watch a match race between Jack Chrisman and I believe,Don Gay. I will never forget the sound Chrisman's Blown Ford wedge engine with nitro made and how it echoed back from the pine trees that night.

The red and black Dodge in the center of your website header was the Bush, Ward and Clyburn car from Baton Rouge, LA. The driver, Stanley Ward lives in Baton Rouge and is a close friend. I will tell him about your web site. He had raced there at the same time peroid as Glenn Cupit

Thank you for making the effort gather some of the history, I still ride by there from time to time. Don't worry about crediting any of these pictures to me.

Dale McMurtry

HELLO

I was glad to find this web site about the old track. I and several friends used to attend. I am sorry I didn't learn of the site earlier because we lost a valuable source of info and memories last July. I am referring to the passing of Wayne McMurtry. Wayne was the tech man at Biloxi after Capt Bill Schumard was transferred from KAFB. Wayne was the tech man until it closed. He also worked at Dauphin Island, Hub city, Gulfport dragway and one in Jackson which I can't recall the name of. I worked at Biloxi part time as tech and scale person and a very brief stint as finish line flagman.( didn't care for that). I ran into a gentleman at Mobile Dragstrip last year who said that his dad was a racer at Biloxi and that he had some printed material and I think some photos too. If I run into him again I will see if he would let copies be made and I will pass them along to you.

THANKS for the memories

I was watching Barrett Jackson auction and thought about the old Biloxi dragway. I googled it and found your web site.

I was there the day the Gagliano dragster crashed, mentioned in Glenn Cupit's article . I was an employee there several times when I was in High School'

I watched the Road Rebel dragster take off, then turn around and head back to the starting line. It disappeared and then I watched the rear part of the dragster appear as it rose after hitting a car and pinning a man at the left front wheel .I have pictures of the dragster after the wreck. I also have some photos of Tommy Ivo with a crewman that is probably don Prudhomme.

To the best of my memory, the guy that was injured by the Road Rebel dragster sued the dragstrip and was instrumental in it changing hands.

I live in Diamondhead, Ms and my home phone no is 228-255-2798

I remember Arfons running the Green Monster at night and the lights ended at the finish line. I saw a lot of sparks when he shut off. I thought he crashed. We got down the track to him and he was just fine. It was very dark to say the least.

Great Web-Info on the Biloxi Dragway. All the listed driver names brought back great memories, but how could you leave out names like Jack Coolie, Sidney Foster, (Black Trash) Jim Brindle (Howard Motors Hemi Plymouth) , Don Bush, Sonny Brooks ect. Some of the best competition races (Grudge) were between Coolie and Brindle in 63-65. I was a $ investor with Harvey & Bill (Deceased) Walther. My ex-wife is still in touch with Midge who resides in Florida. My wife worked the Tower with Bill & Midge 62-64 and won several Powder Puff races with a 60 Vett.

Our young kids would sleep on a bale of hay in the tower while the races went on late into the nite. Again a great trip back in time when I found your site Thanks for keeping the memories going. Give me a call somtime so we can share some stories. Jim Brindle 985+792-1239

Hey guys, I thought I'd drop in and say that I enjoyed your site, but you need to add Part Two of EJ Potter's "Machinations from the Michigan Madman" .... you really leave everybody hanging by only posting the first half! The rest can be found here:

I was just remonesing a little. I am from the New Orleans area (Kenner), living in Houston now and as a teen in the mid to late sixties I enjoyed attending the dragstrip. It was my favorite strip with it tucked away in the pines, and the unmistakable echoing of the ground pounding.

I was a little surprised not to find some of the old gassers not mentioned on the site like Joe Tutone?, with his yellow Willys truck. Or Stone, Woods and Cooke and their beautiful 41 Willys coupe.

Anyway thanks for the memories and keep up the good work,
