S/S Bonanza 'Southern Style (By Charles Meek)
BILOXI,
MISS. -- MAY 27 -- The old style SS/Bonanzas haven't lost any of
their appeal as a wide variety of super stockers were competing
for the cash prizes. Don Grotheer from Oklahoma City was on hand
with his Plymouth SS/B and Harold Dutton from Morrow, Georgia had
his 427 Fairlane SS/B here. Jack Cooley's SS/C 296 Camaro from
Morgan City, Louisiana. Doug Irvine SS/EA record-holding '67 Chevy
from Columbus, Georgia were just some of the good cars that were
competing.
Nineteen cars answered the call for the first round. $350.00 were
at stake and the drivers were really on edge. Red lights sidelined
three of the favorites right in the first round, Dutton's SS/B
Fairlane - Grotheer SS/B Plymouth and Doug Irvine SS/EA Chevy. Roy
Gay from Dickinson, Texas didn't red light in the first round but
the little Firebird wasn't quite ready and he had to shut off. The
final two cars for the money were two SS/EA's Dennis Kyle's '62
Dodge from Memphis, Tenn. And Charlie Rogers' 67 Olds 442 from
Monroe, La. Rogers won with a 13.27 at 94.73 mph.
Second place run-off's found Roy Gay wading thru eighteen cars to
win $250. Cash. Roy put together a string of real consistent runs
- 13.05 - 106.75 mph. Don Grotheer's red light - 13.00 - 109.22
against Ron Lee's Ford, 13.04 - 106.25 against Doug Irvine's
record holding Chevy SS/EA and 13.19 - 105.75 on the final against
Larry Cooper SS/BA Dodge.
Super Stock Bonanza (From Biloxi Dragway Newsletter)
Nineteen Super Stockers put on one of the best shows of the
year. Fairlanes - Camaros - Plymouths - Chevy II - Fords - GTO's -
442's - Firebirds - Chevys - Dodges. They were all there Charlie
Rodgers from Monroe, Louisiana slipped in and walked off with the
first place money with his SS/EA 442 Olds. The Super Stock A-B-C
class cars just couldn't seem to wait on the green and the SS/EA
cars got first and second place. It wasn't all luck though for the
winners. Rodgers and Gay both were turning 13:00's on a 12:87
record and were doing it consistently. The crowd's favorites
appeared to be the two sporty type cars from G.M. Roy Gay (Don's
little brother) beautiful red Firebird 400 and Jack Cooley "Black
Trash 'Lil Bit" Camaro. Just about the best driving job of the
night was turned in by Ron Lee' in his '63 Ford. Ron wasn't as
close to his record as some of the cars but you wouldn't believe
the hole shots he put on some of them. That little black Ford
would jump off the line without spinning a wheel and was gone.
Hard Luck Awards would have to go to Harold Dutton's Fairlane and
Don Grother's Plymouth. Both cars red-lighted twice and fell
victim to hole shots on the other round. Sunday at Hub City
Grotheer finally got his driving right and took first place while
Frank Incrivaglia got sr nd and Dutton finally made it with a
third place win.
