BILOXI, MISS.--MAY 13--The largest number of cars ever to race at Biloxi turned out Saturday night for the Mississippi State Championship Meet 345 strong. Racing got under way at 7:30 with competition elim. 8 cars qualified with down No. 1 spot with low e.t. and Anthony Volpe's B/C.
First up was Huff against O.S. Dahl's B/A Dodge. Huff lost fire and Dahl made a bye at 12.95.
Then Volpe's B/C got by Billy Adams A/SR with a strong 10.07 at 128.03 MPH. Next, John Furey B/A eliminated Pat Lancasters' B/A who towed in all the way from Tuscaloosa, Alabama.
Norman Wilt then drove by Don Whittington's A/ST with a 10.05 - 125.34 MPH.
First round of Street Eliminator found Rodney Smith taking the win with a 12.09 - 91.83 MOH over Jack Hanson B/G.
Next up was A.J. White from Watson, L., against Alvin Ashe's C/MP Corvette from Gulfport. Ashe took the win with a 12.49 at 109.09 MPH.
Dennis Oncale then eliminated Doody Rupert's C/MP Falcon with a 12.57 - 107.65 MPH.
Earlis Allemond A/G Anglia redlighted against  Richard Rosen D/MP and Ted Walters' SS/E GTO missed a gear and watched Leo Greef national record holding D/MSP win with a sub-record 12.65 at 98.79 MPH. Greff runs a double overhead cam Porsche engine for power and would you believe 12,000 r.p.m shift points?
Stock Eliminator found Roy Helton's A/S Chevelle from Hattiesburg, against Glenn Jones N/S Oldsmobile who towed in all the the way from Greenwood, Miss., meeting in the final round Roy played the Christmas Tree perfectly to overcome the better than 4 seconds spot to win top stock eliminator.
Several real good cars eliminated themselves by redlights in early rounds of Stock Eliminator. Larry Oggs in the Royal Rocket Ebb Krebs in the 100% Ford and Elisha Boy's Mr. Clean.
Roy Helton did a real constant job on the Christmas tree and the 4--speed on his hard-fought win. Roy's A/S Chevelle ran right around 12.50 all night.
Second round of competition eliminator found Tony Volpe beating O.S. Dahl and Norman Wilt getting the win over John Furey when Furey lost the transmission on the high gear shift in his B/A. That set the stage for the Wilt & Profumo A/A against Tony Volpe B/C. Tony gave away his spot on the starting line and still almost won with a very fast 9.84 at 140.05 MPH to Wilt's flying 9.78 at 148.27 MPH. A very close run.
Street Eliminator found Dennis Oncale C/MP in the finals against Leon Greff's D/MSP. It was all over on the line when Oncale cut the lights too close and red lighted giving the win to Greff at 13.13.
Handicap top dog and $300. cash and almost $300 in awards went home with Leon Greff D/MSP. Everyone was having to spot the little Porsche powered car, who could run under his record at will. It proved to be an unbeatable combination.
In e.t. bracket action Joe Cabiran '55 T-Bird took #7. Bond Wetherbee Corvette from Biloxi got #8 and George Metter's GTO won bracket #9.
But for the final in Street Eliminator it was Paul Contorno's fantastic C/Gas Chevy/Willys who came out on top. Contorno raced Jim Fike's Chevelle A/MP and had an easy win recording an 11.96.
In the second leg of the get together. it was all Olds again. Johnny Wade was destined to win this one; he was the odds on pick due to his performance in the previous first big round. The last three cars to survive were wade's Pete Sciro's 442 and Keith Hodge's '50 Olds M/Stocker. Hodge got the handicap lead over Wade's black air package stormer, but he was nosed out just before the lights. For the final. it was two 442's: the race was all driver. Both raced heads-up, Pete came out first, but Wade's roared on by on the top end. Oldsmobile is the big word around here from now on; they put on a jolly good show.
