BILOXI DRAGWAY RESULTS FEB. 5, 1967
Rain Halts Match Between Camaro & Mustang
By Charles Meek
BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI -- Feb. 5-- The rain was the deciding factor in today's featured match race. Mike Burkhart from Fort Worth, Texas, was on hand with his all new Camaro to run Louisiana's fasted Ford, Sidney Foster. There wasn't a hint of rain in the blue skies as the races got under way. There were 257 cars and motorcycles classed today. Eighty six cars in E.T. brackets, 9 motorcycles and 162 cars running for trophies.
First round of the match race found Mike Burkhart taking a bye for the win with a 10:26 at 126.40 mph shutting off early. Foster's Mustang fouled the plugs on the burn-outs and had to shut off.
In the E.T. brackets Ted Walters again won No. 6 which was a bonus bracket and pocked $50. The other bonus bracket was #10 won by Paul McDaniels of Gulfport winning $25. #3 winner was Jim Thornton from Jonesville, La., with his potent 289 Ford-powered B/D. #4 winner was the "Prosecutor" Dodge of Bueche-Clyburn & Bob from Baton Rouge, La., they beat Henry Cloutre's Dragster Bike on the money run. Bracket #5 was won by Charles Garner's wild '55 Thunderbird.
S.T Cooper brought the former E/S National record holder "Jiffy No. 2" out for the first time this year and pocketed the money in No. 7. A '65 Corvette owned by Mead Wethabe from Biloxi outlasted 7 cars for Bracket 8 win. Boyd Beckham '59 Pontiac won Bracket nine. Another Beckham, "Uncle Glenn" won Bracket II in his '65 Buick Wildcat.
Second round of the match race was called. This time Sidney Foster was behind the wheel of the back-up car Moran Motor Co's "Defender" Plymouth. Both the little yellow Camaro from Texas and the altered wheelbase Plymouth had huge doses of Nitro in the tank and sounded real good. On the second burn-thru a light sprinkled started. They were staged quickly but to no avail. It was just like glass and both cars had to shut off.
The racers were stopped for more than an hour before they could be resumed. The track never did dry enough for the funny cars to compete their match. James Madere '55 Chevy won Bracket #13. Gary Cole from Austin. Texas won No. 14 in his '54 Cadillac.
Top Dog Eliminator was run on a damp track virtually eliminating all the hotter bracket cars before the first race was run. Final run for the $50. was between #8 Mead Wetherbe '65 Vette and Emile Robicheaux's Bracket 13 Chevelle. On the damp track Weatherbe couldn't get any traction at all and Robicheaux was Top Dog Eliminator.
