Bronco Buster And Golden Rod Go Full Five (By Charles Meek)

BILOXI, MISS. -- Jan 22 -- Two hundred and forty-four race cars filled the pits today and action was hot and heavy in all the E.T. brackets and class runs.

Bracket 2 fell to George Michler's Little Chevy Garner's 427 Ford-powered Thunderbird. The "Charlie's Steak House" T-Bird was real impressive pulling the wheels off the line. Ted Walter GTO marched by Bill Tripoli's Ford. Ferron Roberts Anglia and Butch Hooge's Cobra to take Brackets 6. Alvin Ashe really was lucky to take Bracket 7. He was running in #6 and blew a cylinder so he just pulled the sparkplug and proceeded to win Bracket 7 on seven cylinders.

Floyd Royse won Bracket 8 over a field of 7 cars.

Jack Connelly from Kenner, La. got the green in No. 9 with his big inch Ford. Billy Ballow won No. 10 again in his '67 Ford.

Boyd Beckham's '59 Pontiac snagged Bracket 11, while Rodney Mayeux '66 Comet waded through 8 cars in Bracket twelve. Emile Robicheaux brought his wife's Chevelle out today and got the money in No. 13. C. G. Lovelace from Moss Point sort of bracket into No. 14 when 5 of the 14 cars broke out of the bracket.

The feautured match race today really was a good one. A classic Chevy vs. Ford battle. Doug Nash brought his beautiful lime gold "Bronco Buster" to represent Ford and J.C. Sizemore brought his funny '55 Chevy, "The Golden Rod" to Defend Chevrolet Honors. Neither car elected to take a time trial so when first round was called the crowd lined the fence. Both cars fired and started their burn-ins. It was apparent immediately that something was wrong with the "Bronco Buster".

Nash Tried to stage and couldn't hold it in the beam and red-lighted. Sizemore soloed with a 10:63 at 126:93 mph. Nash ran out of gas about half-way down the track with a stuck by-pass valve in the injectors. He burned 4 gallons of fuel in less than a minute!

Round Two found Sizemore a little anxious and red-lighted while Doug Nash bombed through with a 9:67 at 147.05 mph with 289 cubic inches.

Round Three found it one up. One race apiece. At the green both cars came out even wheels in the air. Sizemore brought the 327 Chevy-powered "Golden Rod" back down perfectly and streaked for the finish line while the "Bronco Buster" tried to play catch up and couldn't. Sizemore 10:19 at 133:92 to Nash's loosing 10.56 at 135.13

Round Four again found the red light deciding the race. The "Bronco Buster" was the automatic winner at the line but they still raced it out with Doug Nash bringing his E.T. even lower, a 9:47 at 138.88 mph to Sizemore 10.34 - 130.62.

Round Five Brought the crowd the crowd to their feet. This was the climax to one of the best matches in a good while at Biloxi. Both cars staged very carefully. And were gone. Nash a 9:44 at 138.03 mph to Sizemore winning 14:43 - 62:11. Nash had red lighted, the "Golden Rod" lost an engine. Immediately there was speculation that the "Bronco Buster" had not left early on the red light but instead, light had filtered through the rims on the very small tires on the "Bronco Buster" causing the red light. Never the less the "Golden Rod" was the winner.

Top Dog Eliminator fell to Ted Walters' GTO giving him a grand total of $100 for his day's play or work, whichever you want to call it.

Bracket 6 was one Bonus bracket and Brackets 10 and 14 split the other bonus money.

The E.T. Brackets were very popular today with 81 cars participating. 163 cars competed for class trophies.
