Ron Hassel Wins Gasser Showdown at Biloxi
From DRAG NEWS
Biloxi, Miss.--Sept. 25--Ron Hassel, the B/Gas record holder, Dick Castro, the C/Gas record holder and Joe Teuton, the South's fastest C/Gasser squared off today in a three-way match race that really proved to be a good one. Hassel and Teuton both were running under the national records.
One hundred and eighty-eight cars and bikes were running in competition today. John Furey won B/A with 11.68 at 114.04 mph. Ken Wood waded thru C/A with ET of 13.26 at 102.15 mph. Patrick Sacco had his new D/A '35 Ford flathead out, turned real good, 13.44 to win class honors. O.S. Dahl took B/G with his 413 wedge-powered Dart with 12.14 et at 114.50 mph. Ray knight managed to win C/G despite having problems all day and Don Castagnatta took D/G with 13.60-99 mph.
First round of the match race proved to be one of the most exciting rounds. Teuton vs. Castro. Castro who is the C/G record holder, halls from LaPuente, Calif. He is visiting relatives in the South and he has really been wanting to tangle with Teuton. Both cars staged very carefully and they were off. Castro toward the finish line, Teton straight up. The little truck got too much bite and pulled the biggest wheelstand ever seen at Biloxi Dragway. Castro got the win at 11.63-118.11 mph.
Second Round found Hassel against Castro. Hassel had to be favored because the beautiful gray Anglia had turned a 10.49 at 130.43 mph in time trials. His own national record is 10.66 At the finish it was Hassel with an 11.10 at 129. Castro broke the single land Chrondeks first, Hassel overcoming a .46 second spot. Meanwhile, Teuton and his crew from Shreve Automotive were frantically working on the truck trying to straighten the front axle.
Gerald Appe collected a bounty in D/SP when he beat Randy Work's D/SP 'Vette. Charles Decker is bringing the et's right on down on his B/FX Chevy II. He won his class with 12.95-107.9 mph.
It looks like Billy Wayne Jones and Elisha Boyd have scared all the Louisiana B/S Chevys off except the two from Morgan City. Billy and Elisha say there are several Chevelles in the Baton Rouge area that they sure would like to see come to Biloxi. Billy Wayne Jones won B/S today unopposed with et of 12.31 at 110.97 mph. CC/S winner was Ted Walters again. Ted had some real tough competition today from Bill Tripli Ford. Billy turned a real good 12.82.
Third Round, Hassel again beat Castro with 11.21 at 129.87 mph. Fourth round Hassel and Teuton up for their first run. Again Teuton had bad luck, breaking an axie on the starting line, Hassel going thru for the win with 11.11 at 129.87. Remember, all these times on Hassel, you have to subtract the .46 spot. Ron was turning very consistent 10.60's on every run.
No. 1 Eliminator action found Walter Cheeseman from Mobile, Ala. the winner with his C/MSP Corvette. No one could catch him. No. 2 Eliminator was Dennis Oncale's C/MP for the second week in a row. Dennis really has this '57 Chevy flying. He turned a best et of 12.21 on a 12.12 nat'l record.
Don Castagnetta outlasted all the gassers for the Gas Eliminator win.
Stock Eliminator fell to "Mr. Would You Believe" Ted Walters. Ted is one of the most consistent class winners we have, but this was his first Stock Elim. win.
Smokey Sharp took Jr. Stock money with his L/Stocker for the second race in a row.
Fifth Round of the match race found Teuton finally getting every thing to work right and beat Castro with an 11.13 at 117.64 mph. Sixth round was the closest race of the day. Teuton vs. Hassel. They were out for blood. Teuton played the lights just right, and was gone to a good lead only to have Hassel catch him right at the lights for thwin with an 11.09 at 129.87 mph.
Top Dog Eliminator was a real tough battle with Oncale's C/MP winning over Ted Walters on the final run.
Final run of the match race was between Teuton and Castro. Castor's engine was not quite right today and Teuton was flying. Joe had a best of 11.04 in time trials and he beat Dick Castro on this run with an 11.25 at 116.27 mph.
Back in the pits there was a spirited exchange going on between
Teuton's crew and Hon Hassel. It ended up in another run between
the two and this time Teuton stayed in front all the way for the
win with 11.13 at 117.18.
