BILOXI DRAGWAY RESULTS SEP. 11, 1966

FEATURED EVENT ATTRACTION: EMMETT AUSTIN FORD VS J.C. SIZEMORE GOLDEN ROD CHEVY

Golden Rod Gets To Austin In Five (By Charles Meek)

BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI--SEPTEMBER 11 -- Heavily overcast skies marked the return to day racing at Biloxi Dragway Sunday. The weather held the number of spectators down, but the racers showed up in abundance, ??4 entries in all.

The featured attraction today was Emmett Austin's Ford versus J.C. Sizemore's "Golden Rod." Sizemore's car is a '55 Chevy "Funny Car" with a fuel-burning, 327 type engine.

In the competition classes, we had several real good dragsters and coupes. A/FD found Ted Hursch from New Orleans, B/D and George Michler and Norman Wilt, both boys from New Orleans, ?/D was John Mistric, B/C had two cars, the breaux & Leslie coupe from New Orleans, and Mickey Carrier from Amite, La. In the trials for No. 1 Eliminator, it was

B/D of George Michler coming on top over the C/D for the trophy. In Gas Eliminator, Ray Knight with the Knight Rider waded thru the biggest field of gassers we've had since the Gass Meet, to take home the money.

First Round of the Match race found most of the fans with a wait and see attitude about Sizemore's Chevy. This was to be the first time he had run at Biloxi with this car. Emmett, who is always a favorite, elected not to use any rosin, while Sizemore used liquid and powder. They staged and were ready at the green. They were off even, Sizemore pulling ahead at the lights with the win, with a 10.46 at 135.33 mph.

Second Round found the funny '55 Chevy again the first across the line with a real good 10.23 at 134.32.

Third Round found the "Snake" pulling out the win with a 10.58 - 123.28 mph., when the "Golden Rod missed fourth gear. That made it two and one, in favor of the Chevy.

Mr. 2 Eliminator action was red hot. Gerlad Topham from Morgan City, La., won B/MP with his Chevy II "Fearless Fly." Alvin Ashe had his new car out in C/MP. It's a little 292-powered Corvette. He ran consistent 12:7 to 12:9, which was good for the first time out, but not good enough to handle Dennis Oncale's Downtown Auto Car. Dennis drove flawlessly to consistent 12:20 to win No. 2 Elim.

Stock Eliminator action was hot and heavy with Emile Robicheaux at the wheel. He drove his car to best ever ET's of 12:50's.

C/S found a bounty car getting beat when Dan Touchstone beat Alfred Kreb's Ford.

Final Stock Eliminator winner was the B/Stocker beating the EE/Stocker for the money.

Smokey Sharp waded thru a tough field of Jr. Stockers to win with his L/S Chevy.

Fourth Round of the match race was called, and again Sizemore's Chevy went thru the lights first with a 10:26 at 133.33. But the red light was on in the Chevy's lane giving the win to Austin's Ford.

Fifth Round and the final run of the match race found Emmett Austin getting a little too anxious and red lighting, giving the match victory to the Chevy.

First race in Top Dog Eliminator went to the C/Gasser. The B/D couldn't overcome the handicap. The C/MP beat the B/Stock, and the L/S took a bye. Next leg found the L/S beating the C/G. That left Smoky in the L/S against Dennis Oncale in the C/MP for the final. The handicap was 3:14 -- it wasn't enough -- Dennis Oncale was Top Dog Eliminator of the day.
