Castor & Bryant Take Disputed Decision Over Mustang (By Charles Meek)

BILOXI, MISSISSIPPI (August 27) - It was one of those nights when everybody decides to come to the races, 233 entries strong. There were some mighty good cars present and a tremendous show was put on for everyone. There were five street hemis running in the various A/S classes and B/S had seven cars entered and the real hot class of the night turned out to be CC/S. There were five cars entered and get this, four of them were in the twelves, Ted Walters' GTO 12.72 at 106.68; Diesel Pontiac 'Tiger' GTO; 12.72 - 106.56; Bill Tripoli's Ford 12.85 - 107.91; and Jerry Breland's Olds 442, 12.91, 105.14. They were really after the "Would You Believe" car of Ted Walters tonight. Ted came through with a tremendous hole shot on the Diesel Pontiac car to win the class. S.T. Cooper has really got his EE/S flying now. He won Class, Stock Eliminator and Top Dog Eliminator for the second week in a row.

The Jr. Stock winner sure were some happy folks. The N/S Corvair of Tony Kirsch from Chalmette, Louisiana, waded through a field of 17 cars to win the bucks.

In the match race action Sidney Foster and Grady Bryant pulled to the line and made their preparation. The yellow lights were removed and they staged very carefully. Then, all of a sudden the little Mustang jumped off the starting line drawing the big red eye, a victim of a broken clutch arm. Bryant soloed thru with a 10.47 - 120.80 shutting off early. Meanwhile, Foster's crew pushed the Mustang back to the pits pulled the fourspeed and proceeded to repair the clutch.

A new car to the area was at the track tonight - Jim Bones with his 427 Comet from Madrars, Oregon, was running E/XS. He didn't have any slicks and was running 13.60's to 13.80's. Finally, he borrowed some cheater slicks and proceeded to bust the twelves wide open finally getting down to the 12.60's.

Billy Work just keeps rolling along in D/SP and No. 2 Eliminator. Bill's little red Corvette turns consistent low thirteens and along with his first rate driving has got the money two races in a row. On the final run for the bracket he defeated Roy Helton's B/FX with a 12.97 at 105.63 mph.

B/A trophy went to Pearlington, Mississippi, for the second week in a row with John Furey, 11.76 - 114.50 mph.

B/MP was won by Mr. Consistency Alvin Ashe from Gulfport with 12.16, 111.38 Don Whittington from Metairie, Louisiana, took A/SR tonight and went on to collect Number One Eliminator money after several months of trying. Don's best time was 12.03 at 117.95 mph.

Second Round of the match race found Sidney Foster again with problems. This time with the rearend. Grady Bryant went thru for the win with a 10.26, 134.93. In Gas Eliminator action Ron Lee in B/G, Ray Knight in C/G and Al Glaser in D/G fought it out with Al Glaser winning the final run, for the money.

Third round of the match race proved to to be one of the most exciting runs we've ever seen at Biloxi. As you all know, if you've ever seen Sidney Foster, he doesn't believe in getting out of it if he gets crossed up a little, and he didn't. At the green they were off in a perfect start side by side about 400 feet out the Mustang started drifting toward the center line and at the third gear shift Sidney almost swapped ends. Meanwhile, Grady Bryant was streaking for the finish line, Sidney gained control and went thru the clocks sideways, side by side with Bryant. The win lights said the Chevy won but Foster said no, that he passed him and was very unhappy with the decision.

Upset Of The Week

Wayne Jones proved Saturday night that he can drive that big 425 horse Impala B/Stocker as good as anyone when he put Elisha Boyd down for the B/S trophy. Elisha was in his '62 Chevy "Mr. Clean" and Wayne was in the car he and Elisha have been campaigning together.

Top Dog Eliminator

S.T. Cooper has been making some good money lately with his EE/Stocker. He won $110 tonight. Sunday August 21, he won Stock Eliminator at LaPlace which paid $100 and August 13th he took home $90. from Biloxi. That's $300. in a three week period. Oh yes, back in June they won Jr. Stock at the regionals at Opelousas. That check was for $150. Sounds like I need to build me a stocker.

$50 Bounty S.T. Cooper, "Jiffy No. 2, EE/Stock

There will be a standing $50.00 Bounty on S.T. Cooper's "Jiffy" No.2" starting September 11th. Any legal 263 horse Chevy E E/Stocker that can beat him carries home $50 of Biloxi Dragway's cold hard cash. Usual no red-light, no break rule applies.
