Joe Teuton's C/Gasser 'King of Gulf South Gassers'

BILOXI, MISS.-- JULY 30--Thirty of the fastest gassers in the Gulf South put on a tremendous show at Biloxi Dragway Saturday night. The second annual Gas Coupe & Sedan Championship meet drew one of the largest crowds of the year at Biloxi Dragway to witness the cream of the gassers from 4 states compete for the $300 first place share of the $1,000 cash prizes.
In A/G three cars fought it out with M.A. Madden in his 40 Willys sedan "The Chicken Picker" from Anniston, Alabama, came out on top over O.S. Dhal from Gulfport, Miss. with a 11:25 at 123.60 mph.
D/G class money went home with the Goff & Devers Racing Team '55 Chevy "The Lil Gold Digger" from Kreole, Mississippi. Horace Goff handled the driving chores winning over a field of 12 cars with 12.67 at 108.56 mph.
E/G honors went to Richard Rosen and Dennis Oncale's E/G '59 Chevy. The Shreve Automotive built car ran beautifully turning consistent 12:90's. G/G class winner was Pat Grannan and H/G went to Malcolm Keating.
In Handicap Gas Eliminator one of the best runs of the night occurred in the first round with the luck of the draw two of the fastest cars in the field pulled to the line, Ron Hassel's B/Gasser in the spectator's lane and Joe Teuton's Shreve Automotive prepared Willy's truck in the tower lane. Teuton's C/Gasser got a .46 of a second handicap. Teuton who hails from the heart of the Cajun Bayou country south of New Orleans played the lights just right went thru the 4-speed flawlessly and beat Hassel with a 11.39 second e.t. and 116.12 mph - only two-tenths off his Gas (C) national record.
Other first round action found Horace Goff, the D/Gas winner, beat the H/Gasser of Malcolm Keating to advance to next round.
Richard Rosen's E/Gas '59 Chevy was up next against M.A. Madden's A/Gasser "The Chicken Picker", a '40 Willys sedan. Madden hails from Anniston, Alabama and is a chicken rancher. The handicap was 2.42 seconds and Madden tried to cut it too close and redlighted giving the E/Gasser the win at 12.92 and 105.18 mph.
