FEATURED EVENT ATTRACTION: LARRY REYES VS CORVETTE AUTO PARTS

Kingfish Roars To New Track Record 8.57 at Biloxi (By Charles Meek)

BILOXI, MISS. -- JUNE 11 -- Larry Reyes stunned the crowd Saturday night with three straight passes in the eights breaking Mr. Norm's track record in the process. His three passes were 8.93, 8.57, 8.74.

Larry Reyes opponent was to have been the Corvette Auto Parts but for some unexplained reason did not show up, call or even try to get word to the track officials at all. There is really no excuse for this kind of conduct. In two years of match racing at Biloxi this was the first time anyone has stood us up. The fans left the track upset about not seeing the expected match, the management was very unhappy to say the least. At last word 3 days after the race no one from the Corvette Auto Parts firm had made any effort to explain their absence. After repeated calls one of the hired hands finally answered the phone Monday and claimed the boss was out and he didn't know where he was and didn't know why they didn't keep their date. He did say however, the car and crew had made no effort to leave Long Beach to make the race dates. They were to run at Biloxi on Saturday night and at Lakeland in Memphis, Tenn. the next day.

Now, back to the races. There was a good crowd of racers present, 145 cars in all. Joe Teuton was running in C/A tonight instead of his regular gas class and turned some strong 11.40's to take class.

The Dupuy Bros. from Metairie, La, was out for the first time this year with their strong '55 Chevy D/MP. They won class with a strong 13.35 et. Dennis Oncale was driving a new car out for the first time tonight and really looked good. The CC/S GTO of the Randolph Bros. disposed of the "Would You Believe" GTO of Ted Walters when Walters redlighted, Oncale going on for the win with a 12.95 clocking. This was the first time Walters had been beaten in 4 races.

It was decided when the Corvette Auto Parts did not show up for Larry Reyes to make two single runs, so sharply at nine o'clock the beautiful silver & blue 'Cuda was pushed to the line. Reyes climbed into the firesuit and Bill Taylor prepared the mighty Hemi. At the green Larry really floored the 'Cuda and blasted through the quarter to their best ever clocking of 8.93 et at 154.10 with the big Hemi banging out on top end.

The eliminations were started and in No. 2 Elim. Joe Teuton C/A '40 Willys truck went through the six car field to emerge victorious.

Stock Elim. went home with the Porche Motors sponsored GTO driven by Dennis Oncale and Jr. Stock winner was Sain Pourcian O/S Ford from Baton Rouge. In Top Dog Eliminator action where all the Eliminator winners run each other, the Dupuy Bros. won in some real close racing. Final run was against Onscale in the CC/S. Dupuy received .19 second spot and was all they needed. In the final run of the night the Kingfish came back to run the Top Dog winner on a handicap basis. The spot was 3.50 seconds but it wasn't enough as Larry roared by about a 100ft. before the finish line with a 8.74 clocking.
