BILOXI, MISS.--JUNE 4--Biloxi Dragway manager Charles Meek booked another crowd pleaser tonight for race fans. Featured match racers were Don Nicholson and Leonard Hughes in a best three match.
Leonard Hughes, a popular local driver, was at the wheel of Jake's Speed Equipment Plymouth. The fuel injected 426 hemi Plymouth was lifting the front wheels in his rosin burn throughs.
Round one--both cars came out of the gate even, with Nicholson driving ahead of the Plymouth in low gear. As the cars went to second gear, both got a little crossed up. Nicholson went across the finish line straight for a 9.12 at 147.63 for the win.
Round two--Nicholson's Comet was wheelstanding about six inches in the burn through. Hughes was lifting his wheels in equal fashion. Nicholson beat Hughes with an 8.89-121.62 to take the overall match. The Comet racer came out of the gate straight, but got squirrely at mid-range forcing Nicholson to lift and get back in it.
The track record for an unblown car was broken by the Atlanta Comet in both of Dyno Don's runs.
Nicholson wiped out the track's mile-per-hour record in a third run (a solo) with an impressive 8.69-154.90 mph.
Alfred Krebs' C/S Ford won Stock Eliminator and Top Dog Eliminator. The Wilkins-Rutherfor-Chapman Chevy powered Ford roaster made it to the traps in 11.78 for the AHRA B/Alzered Class. The B/A team lost to Joe Teuton's C/G Chevy/Willys truck in Gas Eliminator.
Hughes Plymouth made a fantastic 9.17-146.34 solo run after loosing the match. The Plymouth was screaming and going straight.
