BILOXI DRAGWAY RESULTS FEB. 20, 1966
Mr. Norm Sets World Record of 8.58 E.T.
By Charles Meek (From DRAG NEWS)
BILOXI, MISS., Feb. 20th - Everybody has their troubles, even the
fastest car in the nation. That's Mr. Norm, of course. Mr. Norm's
first two runs left something to be desired to say the least. 9.73
and 9.96. But that third run man oh man, did that "goat" fly -
8.58 at 161 mph. Gary Dyer had worked all day hunting for their
troubles. They changed everything that could be changed before
they found something installed backwards in the injection system.
When he finally got the trouble corrected it was almost 5:00 and a
lot of the crowd had left, somewhat disappointed. After Mr. Norm
himself finished sprinkling the rosin Gary brought the big blown
Hemi to life and you could tell immediately that this was to be a
good one. At the green, the blue and gray car seemed to leap off
the starting line and exactly 8.58 seconds later broke the clocks.
Incidentally, the clocks were Chrondeks and were certified
accurate only two weeks before.
More racers turned out for this race than ever before, 270 entries
in all. Also, were four new classes installed at Biloxi Dragway
Sunday. They were CC/S - CC/SS - CC/SA- CC/SSA. Those classes were
mostly made up of the Fairlane an Comet GT's and the 325 horse
Chevelles. There are more stock classes at Biloxi Dragway than at
any other track in the South. Seventy two in all. Automatic
classes run from AA/SA all the way down to N/SA. Same thing in
Strictly Stock Automatic.
Now, getting back to the races. Number One Eliminator was the
little B/D from Baton Rouge, La., owned a by David Jeansonne. They
turned a mighty fine 9.96 at 140.84 mph. There were four dragsters
in all there Sunday and they put on a real good show. Number two
eliminator was a new car to Biloxi Dragway. It was a B/MP Chevelle
from Jackson, Miss., owned by Billy Bullock. They ran a real
strong 12.54 at 113.06. Gas Eliminator was one of the biggest
upsets we've ever had at Biloxi Dragway. The H/G Volkswagon of
Leon Greff, Jr., put down the B/G truck of Teuton-Portier-Dugan
for the win in Gas Eliminator. The little yellow truck broke a
timing chain about 300 feet out from the line. Leon hails from
Metairie, La.
Top Stock Eliminator for the second week in a row was Ken Guy from
Baton Rouge in his Hemi-Plymouth. Stock Eliminator was a real hard
fought class with the win finally going to Elisha Boyd's big bad
409 Chevy. Final run was between the 409 Chevy and Maverick Number
Two driven by Jerry Reid from Jayess, Miss. Jerry's car is 375
horse '61 Ford. Junior Stock and Top Dog Eliminator of the day was
the little red Triumph of Riley Clifton from Mississippi City,
Miss. Riley really has the 4-cylinder humming. He's turning pretty
close to his class record, and he really knows how to make the
most of his spots.

The ads said "Mr. Norm" invades the South", but Sunday Mr. Norm's Grand Spaulding Dodge took the South by storm, and when I say storm I mean storming. An 8.58 e.t. at over 160 mph. proves that. On the first two runs he couldn't seem to get the right mixture but later it was found out that a spring in the injection system was in backwards and corrected for the final earth-shaking run.
In the match race between "Moonshot" and the Prosecutor, the new funny car Plymouth of Hughes & Candies (Moonshot) won by default when the Prosecutor broke. This was the first time this car had even been cranked up since its complete funny car treatment and turned in impressive 10.0's and 10.1s.
In A/SP Class Milton Johnson, Jr. made an impressive run in his 427 Chevy powered 'vette. In C/G William Sidney went all the way for a class win - a very hard class to win.
Be sure not to miss, 3 weeks from our last race, the AA/FD Match Race of the century. This will put Val LaPort's "All American" from Tampa, Fla. against Bud Rouche's "Guzler" from Chicago. This will pit north against south with both cars turning in the 7 second and 200 mph brackets.
