BILOXI, MISS. Jan 23rd - Sunday morning at nine o'clock the sky was completely overcast and the temperature was hovering around 30 degrees at Biloxi Dragway. But that didn't stop the racers, 158 entries strong. Plus the two big featured attractions - Art Malone's big U.S. 1 Fueler and the Gasser Match cars - "The Mississippi Rebel" and the Little yeller truck of Portier-Teuton & Dugan.
In the gasser match it was the B/G truck the winner in three straight as "The Miss. Rebel" couldn't withstand the top and charge of the flying pick-up. The B/Gasser was really hauling with a best E.T. if 11:44 at 12.60 mph.
Talking to Joe Teuton after the race he gave us a few facts on the truck. It's a 301 Chevy with an Engle cam built by Shrene Automotive at 2519 Airline Hwy. in New Orleans. Joe says they have really done them a good job.
"The Miss. Rebel was flying, too, turning their best E.T. ever with a 12.07 in C/Gas. But, with just .44 of a second spot, the little pick-up went by right in the lights.
The Col. Art Malone lived up to his reputation Sunday and did what he said. He broke the Swingle-Garlits E.T. record with a very fast 7:75 at 201:34 mph. That is above the mph record, too, but we were having some troubles with the top speed clocks so we couldn't officially give it to him. So, Paul Vanderly still has the official strip speed record for AA/Fueler at 196 mph.
In regular class runs Richard Hogue's B/D went all the way to No. 1 Elim. with E.T.'s in the low tens. C.J. Coludrovich's C/Gasser was running in the 12:8 bracket. It was good enough to carry him to class win and Gas Elim.
Elisha Boyd was the A/S winner turning below the National Record three times Sunday - 12:28, 12:30 and 12:37, National Record 12:45.
Jr. Stock winner was Emile Troxier from Westwego, La. in his '65 Ford truck turning in the fifteens.
Alvin Ashe won No. 2 Elim. for the second week in a row in the B/MP Irritator, Times were in the low twelves.
Stock Elim. and Top Dog Elim. was the fine running E/S from Jackson, Miss. driven by Larry Draughn. The little 270 horse '57 Chevy was running right on the national record and made the most of his handicaps.

Drag Teen

By Richard Petty
The skies favored us at Biloxi Dragway Sunday, and by noon it was bright and sunny; although still a bit cold. But the action was red hot! Col. Art Malone's U.S. #1 AA/FD really put on a show with a final blast of a 7.75 e.t. After Art's second run he burnt a valve but pulled the head and replaced it in time for a final 3rd run.
In the gasser match race it was the little B/G willys pick--- of Teuton. Portier & Dugans over the C/G '55 Chevy "Miss. Rebel" of Gibson & Shepherd. On all three runs the "Rebel" came out of the hole strong hard, held its lead until the very last at top end when the little truck came by for 3 very close races. After the 2 out of 3 match race, Mr. Chester Shepherd over the controls for a grudge run with Col. Reb B/G driven by Bill Clotfelter. Chester had him all the way, but reached for 3rd and it wasn't there and the Col. Reb went on for the win.
Gary Kisstmayer had his E/MP '57 Chevy out Sunday and turned a 18.95 for the by on his class win. Kenny Choiner took his class in C/SA with a 14.68. Kenny runs a new '66 Chevelle SS 396. Mike Cox again had his G.T.O. out Sunday and got down to final class run off before being beaten in hard to win B/SS class. Jimmy Askew showed up with his '63 Falcon in J/SA.
In the next race look for Dennis Roberts' '66 Tempest overhead cam 6 cylinder. This is the first one to run at Biloxi and it should be interesting to see it. Also, the Young-wieman's honking J/S '55 Chevy will be on hand after a complete competition set up. Look out for this one!
Be sure to be there next week when the feature attraction of the day will be Sox & Martin pitted against Bobby Woods' blown injected Chevelle. This will be a real match race. Also as if that weren't enough, a 3-way match race between 3 of the fastest A/Sers in the nation. Elisha Boyd's '60 Chevy; Lewis Sharp's Pontiac; and Ron Lee's '63 Ford. This will be a real battle.
