BILOXI, MISS., Jan 9th--If you were at Biloxi Dragway Sunday you
saw a real pro in the person of Billy Jacobs. You saw a man who
flipped his car over four times at Phenix City, Alabama, on
January 2. You saw a man who was in the hospital at Columbus,
Georgia for two days and had 30 stitches in his scalp from
fiberglass cuts from shredded fiberglass fenders and hood.
Everyone who saw the car said it was totally destroyed. Everyone
but Billy Jacobs. Billy is the type of man who feels when he makes
a race commitment he is obligated to keep it. Billy got out of the
hospital Tuesday night. Early Wednesday morning started working.
They worked around the clock through Friday night. They had to
straighten the frame, put an entirely new front end under the car,
repair the rear end, put complete steering mechanism in the car,
replaced the injectors, pulled oil pan and checked engine, got to
Biloxi about 11:30 Sunday and proceeded to beat Emmett Austin
three straight, with a best ET of 10.20 at 148 mph. Now, I ask
you, "Who else would have done it?"
The 390 Fairlanes and Comets, 396 Chevelles and 389 GTO's, 442
Oldsmobiles and VW's were out in force Sunday. It's a little early
to tell yet but from results of Sunday, it looks like the 335
horse Fairlanes and Comets are going to be the cars to beat in C/S
- C/SS - C/SSA. They were turning mid fourteen second times while
the 325 horse Chevelles were turning low fifteens. The year is
young yet though and maybe when one of the old time Chevy men get
through with one of those Chevelles - look out!
The Knight-Ashe B/MP '57 Chevy continues its quest of the eleven
second bracket. They had a best e.t. of 12 flat Sunday winning No.
2 Elim. and coming mighty close to Top Dog.
S.T. Cooper Jiffy II broke his own national record unofficially
Sunday with a very fast 13.06 in time trials.
Emile Robicheaux was out today with the Cooly Robicheaux 396
Chevy II. They were checking handling and traction problems and
did not enter competition. The car is painted a brilliant Inca
Gold.
The Teuton-Portier-Dugan B/Gasses was really flying. They had a
best e.t. of 11.51 winning Gas Elim. and going all the way to the
finals for Top Dog Elim. They will be back next Sunday running a 3
out of 5 match race with the Mississippi Rebel C/Gasser.
Top Dog Elim. of the Day and the proud winner of $90 was the A/S
Pontiac from Jackson, Miss. driven by Lewis Sharp. Lewis was in
the mid twelves second bracket all day. He made the most of
his handicap beating the B/Gasser of Joe Teuton on the finals and
the B/MP of the Knights on the run before.
Drag Teen
From BILOXI DRAGWAY NEWSLETTER
By Richard Petty
The action was really "Where The Action Is" Sunday at Biloxi
Dragway.
In case you weren't where the action was Billy Jacobs put down
Emmett Austin 3 straight. Emmett was having troubles all day with
his funny car chassis and he said both head gaskets were seeping.
Also, running were Herman Moore and Sidney Foster. Herman shut
down in a 2 out of 3 match race. Herman did the driving for Billy
due to his injuries.
A couple of teenagers who were racing were Alan Kester's Dodge
Charger B/SS who took the win in his class with a 15.15. This
Charger was the first on to run at this strip and by the way it
ran. It could prove to be some real trouble for the competition.
Also, running was Mike Cox B/SS GTO who got down to the final
class run. This was the car's first time out for competition and
should be running better in the future.
