BILOXI DRAGWAY RESULTS JULY 31, 1965
FEATURED EVENT ATTRACTION: JIM
O'CONNOR DODGE VS HOWARD NEAL FORD
Jim O'Connor Astounds Crowd With a 9.52 Blast (By Charles Meek)
BILOXI
DRAGWAY, BILOXI, MISS. (July 31, 1965) -- Jim O'Connor from Mr.
Norm's Grand-Spaulding Dodge in Chicago, IL, was at Biloxi Sat.
night to take on Howard Neal's '65 fuel injected Falcon. The
featured attraction was a three out of five match race between
these two cars and the fans turned out in droves to see Gulf
Coast's first appearance of a Mopar "Funny Car". The little Falcon
made a warm-up run at 10.75 and 129.40 mph. The big Dodge stayed
in the pits being carefully tuned by Jim, who decided not to take
any warm-up runs.
First round of the match race and the crowd packed the sidelines
to get a little better glimpse of the cars. Jim O'Connor seemed to
be the favorite with the crowd as the big Dodge Funny Car roared
through the rosin several times. Finally both cars were ready, the
lights started blinking and then the red came on in the lane the
Falcon was in.
Jim O'Connor blasted thru the quarter with a 10.26 at 127.65 mph
letting off before the first top speed clock and the crowd went
wild.
Second round the crowd was really noisy yelling for Jim to put the
big Ram in the nines It was a good start and Jim didn't disappoint
them. 9.79 at 131.38 and still not staying on it through the
clocks. That gave O'Connor two wins in a row over the Falcon. By
this time it was apparent that little Falcon from Ellijay, Ga. was
a little outclassed. Bob and Howard can turn in the 10.30 to 10.60
bracket but the nines are out of their reach with the old Wedge.
Third round was called and the people liked to have went wild.
This big Dodge of Jim O'Connor was by far the most crowd-pleasing
car to be at Biloxi all year, and that includes the "Little Red
Wagon", Connie Swingle's Swamp Rat. and Dickie Harrell's Little
Chevy II. Now back to the third round -- as the lights started
their count down Jim's Dodge caught the red light giving the round
to the Strip Teasers Falcon, but listen to the times on the
Dodge--a fabulous 9.52 at 138.46 mph.
It was getting very close to the 12:00 curfew so the match race
was shortened to two out of three so there would be time for the
Eliminator runs.
