BILOXI DRAGWAY, JULY 17 -- One of the largest crowds ever to witness a drag racing event at Biloxi Dragway turned out tonight to see the four-way match race composed of four of the fastest A/FXers in the area. Present were the Hughes & Candles '65 Plymouth -- the Moonshot from Houma, La. Emmet "Snake" Austin with his Ford T-Bolt from Columbus, Ga., "Color Me Gone" Dodge of Jimmy Arnold from Pensacola, Fla. and Moran Motor Co.'s "The Defender" '65 Ply. from Baton Rouge, La. plus a field of 180 of the finest cars ever to run at Biloxi.
First round of the match race found "Color Me Gone" up against "The Defender" and it was "The Defender" the winner when Jimmy Arnold got a little crossed up coming out of the hole, 11.21 at 120 mph.
Emmit Austin was up against Leonard Hughes in the "Moonshot". Emmet knew he had to get a hole shot on Hughes to win because Hughes had the best E.T. in time trials at 10.74 125.87. As the lights flashed "The Snake" struck a little too quick and red lighted giving Hughes the win at 11.01 124.82 mph.
Emmet Austin then took on "Color Me Gone" and was able to put the hex on another one of them Goats as Emmet calls them with an 11.04 120.32 mph. Thus eliminating Jimmy Arnold for the night.
In the regular Eliminator runs Gas Elim. final winner was the C/G of A.J. Coludrovich. The A/G couldn't catch the fast running C/Gasser from Gulfport, Miss.
Stock Elim. was the D/S '57 Chevy of S.T. Cooper coming out on to with a 13.68. Jr. Stock was Floyd Reidlinger H/SA Pontiac from New Orleans really taking advantage of his spots.
This meet had by far the best rounded field of competition ever
witnessed by this writer at Biloxi.
