Southern Style Super Stock Bonanza Blast

BILOXI, MISS. . . APRIL 24 - It was Super Stock Bonanza Southern style Saturday night at Biloxi Dragway. Sixteen cars were in competition from eight states. Following is a list of cars and best E.T.'s of the night for each.
Ted DeTar Automotive with Dave Rupp driving the "Big Money Dodge" from Wichata, Kansas with an 10:85.
Wickersham Ford from Orange, Texas. Clester Andrews driving the Hi-rise Mustang to a 10:91.
Moran Motor Company from Baton Rouge had their '64 and '65 car there. They broke their '65 Plymouth and the '64 had troubles.
From Columbus, Georgia came Emmet "Snake" Austin and his "Lil Rattler" T-Bolt. Best E.T. of 11.12.
Larry Coleman from Memphis, Tennesse had his '65 Warhorse Plymouth on hand with an E.T. of 10:89.
The Corruptor No. Two of C.J. South from Brimingham with an E.T. of 10:83. '64 Plymouth Hemi-roid 11:24.
The Dixie Stripper T-Bolt of John Donilson from Birmingham, Ala. went 11:00 flat.
Bueche and Ward with "The Prosecutor" from Baton Rouge, La. got an 11:10.
Billy "Big Deal" Jacobs and his "Kid Goat" made the Ten's also. 10.94 - Dart, Enterprise, Ala.
Sonny Brooks managed an 11:04 with his all steel '65 Plymouth from Baton Rouge, La.
Pete Dorsey's national record holding A/MP '64 Plymouth went 11:08 - Elbe, Ala.
Leonard Hughes' 65 Pymouth "Moonshot" from New Orleans, La. 11:06.
The Taylor-Davis Racing Team from Memphis turned in an out-standing performance in their '64 Dodge seeting a new track record of 10:69. Also, times of 10:71 and 10:73.
Vanderly-Marshall team from Biloxi with their 427 Mustang with an 11:57.
In regular class competition Ron Lee's wheelstanding Henry-J walked away with Gas Elimination honors beting Emile Robicheaux's B/Gasser with an 11:61 at 118.42. Ron was running in the Gold Dust pattern put down by the Super Stockers and he was pulling three foot wheelstands at will Ron's car is a 427 Ford powered A/Gasser.
Another car and driver who used the rosin to full advantage was the B/A of Bill Kirkpatrick. He turned his best E.T. ever at 11:89 to take No. 1 Elim. - Pascagoula, Miss.
Billy Yelverton of Baton Rouge garnered No. 2 Elim. money with his B/MP Corvette at 12.22. Billy says he's trying for the points championship in his region.
Stock Elim. honors went to Elisha Boyd's A/S '62 Chevy. Elisha always turns in a fine performance with his 409. Best E.T. was 13.35. This was beyond the doubt the best S/S meet ever held in the area with 6 cars in the ten's and seven more were going 11:20 or better. Following is a complete run-down of all four rounds of competition.
First round saw the Taylor-Davis Dodge from Memphis, Tenn. beat the "Big Money Dodge" driven by Dave Rupp from Wichita, Kans. with a 10:84 and 128.57 mph. Next up was Pete Dorsey from Elba, Ala. with his national record holding A/MP Plymouth against Moran Motor Company of Baton Rouge, La. It was Dorsey with an 11:08 at 124.13 mph. Larry Coleman from Memphis with his "Warhorse" Plymouth won with a 10:89 at 126.22 mph over the Hi-rise Mustang of Wickersham Ford driven by Clester Andrews.
Bueche and Ward from Baton Rouge with the '64 Maverick Dodge they have just bought won over John Donilson in the "Dixie Stripper" T-Bolt from Birmingham with an 11:10 at 125.00 mph.
Billy Jacobs and his "Kid Goat" from Enterprise, Ala were then paired with the Vanderly-Marshall Mustang from Biloxi. It was the "Kid Goat" with a 10:99 - 119.84.
Sonny Brooks from Baton Rouge with his "Bounty Hunter" '65 Plymouth beat Leonard Hughes with his "Moonshot" with an 11:04 - 123.28. Emmit "Snake" Austin from Columbus, Georgia, the '65 NASCAR Winternationals Mr. Stock Eliminator Titles with his T-Bolt beat C.J. South's Plymouth out of Birmingham with an 11.18. Gene Snow from Fort Worth, Texas drew the bye.
Second let saw Taylor-Davis beat Gene Snow with a 10.94.
Larry Coleman took the measure of Bueche and Ward 11:45 - 125.87 mph.
Emmett Austin won over Pete Dorsey 11.14 - 123.11.
Billy Jacobs shut down Sonny Brooks 10.94 - 124.48.
Third leg was Jacobs over Taylor-Davis 10.98. Larry Coleman's "Warhorse" made the finals putting down Emmett Austin with a 10.97 - 126.40.
Finals for the first round was Larry Coleman and the "Warhorse" Plymouth against Billy Jacobs "Kid Goat" Dart.
Coleman withstood the challenge of the Hemi-Dart with a 10.89 - 127.18
Second Round - First Leg: Rupp over Moran 11.40 - Donilson over Jacobs 11.12 - Dorsey over Bueche 11.18 - Andrews over Snow 10.95 - 124.13 - South over Austin 11:30 - Taylor-Davis over Hughes 18.81 - 125.00 - Brooks over Vanderly 11.18.
Second Leg: Taylor-Davis over Pete Dorsey 10.78 - South over Donilson 124.82 10.83 - Rupp over Brooks 125.87 10.94 - Andrews - Bye.
Third Leg: Taylor-Davis over South 125.52 at 10.71 - Rupp over Andrews 123.62 10.90
Finals - Second Round: Rupp over Taylor-Davis 10.85 at 126.30 mph.
Third Round - First Leg: Hughes - Bye - Austin over Brooks 11.12 113.49 - Bueche over Dorsey 11.28 124.30 - South over Jacobs 10.94 125.40 - Donilson over Snow 11.00 122.44 - Taylor Davis over Andrews 10.73 126.22.
Second Leg: South over Austin 11.04 at 125.52 - Taylor-Davis over Hughes 10.69 at 126.40 - Donilson over Bueche 11.48 at 121.20.
That left the four round winners to run for the $300 first prize. Larry Coleman and the "Warhorse" Plymouth soloed with an 11.79 when Taylor-Davis fouled Dave Rupp in the Ted DeTar "Big Money Dodge" took the measure over Clester Andrews with an 11.32 as the rain came down.
Track officials and the two drivers talked it over and a decision was reached to split the money between the two drivers.
