BILOXI, MISS. March 14 If you haven't seen one of these new A/FX Mustangs, you've really missed something. Clester Andrews for Wickersham Ford in Orange, Texas was at Biloxi Dragway Sunday and he really flies. The little fastback Mustang set a new track E.T. record at 10.74 backed up by a 10.95. Top end speed 126.93 mph and this is with the '65 Hi-rise type engine. Also, on hand was the Hughes and Candies '65 A/FX Plymouth out of Houma, Louisiana. This was the first time out for this car and they really let everyone know they are out to win this year. In time trials, the Big Plymouth was going 11.10 to 11.20 at 126 to 127 mph.
The new strictly stock rules have proven to be well liked by the stockers. The rules consist of just what the name says..strictly stock. No cheater slicks, no cutouts, no distributor modification, no exhaust modification. The regular stocker rules haven't been forgotten though. There are two divisions.
In the stocks AA/S was won by John Bankston of Hammond, Louisiana, in his '63 Ford at 12.95 110.42 mph. A/S laurels went to David Busbea from way up Meridian, Mississippi with his steel '63 Ford at 12.98. Stock Elimination was captured by 283 horse D/S Chevy of Tommy Voles of Long Beach, Mississippi, at 14.05. Jr. Stock was won by the fine running '64 Comet of Roy Robinett of Houma, Louisiana. In the A/FX Class runoff Leonard Hughes got the jump on the little Mustang of Clester Andrews to take the first round at 10.86 126.10 mph. Hughes anxious to sew up Top Elimination of the day, jumped the flag in the final runoff giving top stock to Rocky Stone from New Orleans in his '64 T-Bolt at 12.99.
In the Gasser Ranks, Rex Gregory's 337 cu. in. Chevy powered '37 Chevy won Gas Eliminator with a best E.T. of 12.37 107.30 mph in his Bee-Gasser. No. 1 Elim gold was won by the C/A of Robert Belton, but in a cubic inch check, the car was found illegal.
No 2 Elim. was the C/MP of Blake and Strickland at 13.20 elapsed time. Top Eliminator money went to the D/Dragster of Anthony Gaffia of New Orleans when he beat the C/Dragster of Frank Miquet.
Another one of the so-called approved type bell housings didn't hold when one of the C/Gassers wound a little tight and scattered debris everywhere. Luckily the driver escaped injury. This just proves there's no substitute for the steel scattershield.
