BILOXI DRAGWAY RESULTS MAY 15, 1960
FEATURED EVENT ATTRACTION: WAITS -
VANDERLEY - BURGESS
Chevy Dragster Takes Top Eliminator (From DRAG NEWS)
Biloxi,
Mississippi May 15 - Another National Record fell victim to Albert
Waits of New Orleans, driving his Chevy powered fuel injected
unblown 301 cubic inch dragster. Waits turned the quarter mile in
a breath taking 146.34 mph, a new record for C dragsters. In his
second run to make it official, he turned 142.86 mph.
Two local fast boys were present with their Dragsters to put the
pressure on Waits in Top Eliminator Competition.
Si Burgess in his Chevy powered A Dragster turned eleven seconds
flat at 133.41 mph before he fell victim to clutch trouble and had
to withdraw from competition.
Paul Vanderley in his Chrysler powered A Dragster turned a 10.84
at 136.36 mph so he was the only one left between Waits and Top
Eliminator of the day.
As they approached the line the crowd stood up in anticipation of
the race to come. The flag fell and both machines left the
starting line in a cloud of burning rubber. It was an even start
and remained that way until the half way point where Waits turned
on the power to win by six car lengths. The winning time was 10.78
secs. 142.46 mph.
In Little Eliminator competition Marion Walton of New Orleans
driving his Chevy powered blown A Sport machine took home the
honors. This is his first appearance at the local strip in his new
car, but he said it would not be his last. The machine itself is
purple and shaped similar to a Fiat, and my! how it does run. His
closest competitor was his buddy from New Orleans, Andy Zanka, in
his Nationals winning 54 Corvette.
Zanka took a commanding lead off the line and it looked like an
upset in the making, when Walton turned on the power to cross the
finish line three car lengths in the lead. The winning time was
12.77 seconds at 120 mph.
