"B" Dragster Sets Strip Record In Mississippi
Biloxi, Miss., May 24 -- Danny Taylor came back today to set a
new strip record of 132.50 miles per hour in his cadillac powered
"B" Dragster. In his first run of the day he warmed up with a
11.61 sec. at 124.20 mph and it looked like he would break the old
strip record of 126.20 mph held by himself. However this was not
to be until the competition in Top Eliminator forced his to turn
on the horses and he blazed thru the traps at 132.50 mph. in 11.68
sec. to take the trophy and set a new top speed record.
The 1955 Cadillac motor which propels this 1453 lb. dragster was
built by Danny and his father with the assistance of Person's Auto
Parts of Bayou La Batre, Ala. He bored it out to 3 and 15/16
inches, kept the stock stroke, added an Isky E2 cam, six carbs,
and runs a 37 LaSalle transmission with a Ford 411 locked rear end
with getz gears. A Vertix magneto and a pair of 6 and 3/4 Bruce
slicks completes the job.
In the contest for little top eliminator Andy Anderson in his
"B" Gass pontiac disposed of Johnny Boone driving his "B" Modified
Stock Chevy with a run of 15.41 sec. at 99.26 mph to win the semi
finals. That pitted him against Merrill J. Fischer in his "B"
Sports Corvette. Andy came off the line first, and it looked like
he had it made util the last few yards when Merrill began to inch
up and the drew even. It was impossible to determine the winner
from the sidelines and we had to wait for the official signal from
the flagman to know that the Corvette had nosed him out in 15.12
sec. at 99.56 mph.
