Old Timers Headline Biloxi Drag Race Opener (Keesler AFB Day)

Biloxi, Miss., April 12 -- Eleven antique autos put on a real drag race Sunday to thrill the hearts of old and young alike. After a parade down the strip, the autos were paired off and dragged in two classes- -small and heavy. -- A 1929 Model A Ford, returned to like new condition and driven by Capt. McCarrty took the '24 stock driven by Luke Melton . . . the E.T. was 25.67 sec, at 52.00 mph. A 1929 Marmon Touring car driven by Capt. Cook tore up the strip in 27.02 sec. with a speed of 53 mph to take his car class. All the antique autos are owned by members of the Antique Auto & Engine Club of Miss. The only car trouble of the day was a '23 air cooled Franklin which became overheated.

Frank Marshall in his "B" gas Buick took T.E. trophy and Al Morris walked off with the Little Top Eliminator.

The next race is scheduled for April 19 when there will be the first showing of the 1959 model boats on the Gulf Coast, one of which will be towed down the strip by a 1900 MacIntyre.

April 5th coupe class winners were: A-Peter De Pena with a Chrysler engine had a speed of 113.49, with a 12.84 E.T. B--Joe E. Lewis, Chevy engine. 15.20 E.T. and a speed of 94:10 mph.
