BILOXI DRAGWAY RESULTS MARCH 22, 1959

Tom Penny In Biloxi Win (From Drag News)

Biloxi, Mississippi, March 22 - Mechanical failure sidelined all Dragster and Roadsters here today but with the big boys out of the running, the gas and sports classes took charge of the program and provided the spectators with just as much action even if it was at a slightly slower speed.
In the Top Eliminator battle Tommy Penny's Olds powered A gas 1930 Model A Ford coupe went off against Grady Bitsworth with a B sports fuel injected Corvette. The Corvette surged off the line but was no match for the gasser when it swooshed ahead to win... going away at 100.55 mph in 14.18 sec.
The first heat for Little Top Eliminator saw Jr. Bonicard in his C gas Chev square off against the C gas Chev entry of Phillip Bergeron. Both men came off the line at once amid at the squeal of turning and odor of burning rubber. It was apparent that both drivers. were getting everything possible out of their cars and each was determined to win. Just at the finish line Bergeron edged ahead to win with a speed of 91.83 mph in 14.83 seconds. The final leg of Little Top Eliminator was Bergeron and the Frank Marshall driven B gas Buick powered Ford. Bergeron grabbed a solid lead off the line and lead most of the way. However, Marshall was not to be denied and crossed the finish line first with a very creditable top speed of 100.67 mph in 14.31 sec.
The powder puff derby provided competition for a large entry list of lady drivers. Each of them threw caution to the wind and drove like mad to win a trophy. The eventual winner in the modified section was Zora Marshall in 14.83 seconds and a top speed of 95.55. Ruff Blanchard was the Trophy winner in stock with a 17.07 E.T. and a speed of 83.72 mph.

(Glenn Cupit's Road Rebels Plate)
This was the final race to determine club championships for the winter season. The lead has changed hands nearly every race and the final results were not determined until the final half of the race. The Road Rebels of New Orleans won with 584 points followed by the PaceMakers with 529 points and the West Side Dragons with 435 points.
Gulf Coast Drag Strip will be closed Sunday, March 29 in observance of Easter.
